Phenomenal Woman; The Competitive Transition Into Adulthood.

WELCOME back boo,

I hope you are all well.

Since starting this blog, my real passion truly resonates in our generation’s FUTURE as the heir to the throne we call ‘earth’. So today I want to celebrate femininity– a post inspired by my favourite poetic piece; Maya Angelou~ Phenomenal Woman.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I think it is abundantly clear by now that us females should love the skin we are in unconditionally. Nobody else can be YOU and nobody else can define YOU; however EVERYONE else can inspire you. As women we should work together to grow. Together. I feel like nobody talks about that awkward age of 18-21; Absolute identity CRISIS.

Are you still merely a girl or are you a woman? Such a simple question, yet such complexity in its lack of answers. Young females of our generation need to make the transition not only into adulthood but into WOMANHOOD by constantly competing with each other? And not for something as menial as male attention, but for our futures. For our careers. For respect. Even for opportunities. This is the first thing, that in my opinion, needs to change.

Pretty women wonder where our secret lies? It lies in the degrees we are qualified to slay, the hours of work we put in on the side to support ourselves and take care of the bills that are suddenly expected of us (because we ‘are adults now’) to pay. It lies in our aspirations, our drive, our ambitions when we strive.

We are women, phenomenally.

We were NOT built only to be cute or suit a fashion model’s size. We were built to bear children, to own businesses, to be educated. We were built to raise our peers up to power and success; we were built to be blessed.

We are women, phenomenally.

It’s in the reach of our arms; When we do the manual jobs that we were supposedly physically unfit for for centuries.
It’s in the span of our hips; Embrace your curves however prominent they may be- we are ALL Instagram baddies, we are all supermodels, we are all Beyonce- okay now I’m pushing it ;).
It’s in the stride of our step; When we walk into our corporate jobs, noble professions and businesses after graduating. Don’t worry too much about making it to your goal, worry about staying motivated and everything will fall into place.
It’s in the curl of our lips; Embrace your identity and freedom of speech. As women we need to speak UP and support each other when we take risks and use our knowledge to make a difference.

We are women, phenomenally.

Phenomenally women, thats WE.

Welp! That’s it for another post! I really hope this inspired someone to work WITH each other rather than compete against one another. I have been so inspired myself lately by the movements I am seeing my peers make in their business, career, educational and personal endeavours. I believe our generation will put an end to the pointless fight between us females to get to the top. We can ALL make it because we are all phenomenal.

Remember to keep on slaying,

See you next time xoxo

  1. Read this post with my proud hand in the air like yes ! There used to be an organization on Instagram called Maverick Hill. I bought a tshirt from them that says “Power Women Empower Women”. This post remind me so much of that shirt and the overall message. In a perfect world, all women would get this message and live it.

    1. Hahaha thank you so much! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! & Wow, I wish I could get my hands on that T-shirt! Indeed, it is only through working together that we can empower each other! I hate how we are posed against each other; competing for what exactly? we don’t have to compete with each other at all! There is enough room for us ALL to succeed (in a perfect world) or at least room for us to ALL try!

  2. Funny story, I used to recite the phenomenal woman poem for recitals and pageants as a child. Isn’t it funny how much confidence you have as a kid versus in your teenage and plus years? I’ve definitely had friends who said they would support me but never did. It’s really disheartening and I think it comes from a place of jealousy. We as women really should start being supportive of each other, but we also need to look inward and find that confidence to call ourselves phenomenal women too.

    1. Oh wow that’s so amazing! So glad that someone else loves the poem aswell; Maya Angelou is such a huge inspiration! & That’s such an interesting point and SO true! I think the older you get the more exposed to societal pressures you become! Suddenly your gender, age, academic success and even skin colour become something people use to judge and perceive you. But yes as you said it is definitely jealousy and insecurity! At the end of the day if you are succeeding and reaching your goals then there is nobody to be jealous of; just everybody to support! Thanks so much for your comment once again!
