With the holidays fast approaching, it can be a great time to enjoy parties with friends, good food, drinks, and plenty of family time too. It also makes it a great time for gift giving, as it is the season of goodwill and all of that. But when it comes to Christmas, there can be a lot of excess, including things like the gifts or things that you get given. Which is why it can be a good idea to have a declutter before the festive season starts. With decorations in the home too, too much excess can be messy and leave the home looking cluttered overall. And this isn’t talking about throwing everything out and going all minimal. But it is more about making things simpler, making the home less full, and making the whole time a lot less stressful.
If a declutter before the holidays sounds just like the thing that you need, then here are some of the ways to go about it. It doesn’t have to be scary or overwhelming, and it can mean that your home has a good clean, organise, and sort through of the things that you no longer need (and at this time of year, can be great for donations to charity or thrift stores).
Make a Plan
To get on with your decluttering plan, it is a good idea to know who you want to go about decluttering. Is it going to be an all at once type of thing where you might need to hire a skip? Or more of a small amounts everyday kind of thing? From there, you can decide what you will do and when. When schedule it in (like a Saturday to clear your wardrobe, for example), then it is way more likely to happen. So schedule it in and it will make a big difference to how much (and how soon) it all gets done.
To start off the decluttering process, it can be a really good idea to start off with a deep clean of the home. When was the last time you pulled the fridge out to clean under there, or moved the beds to vacuum? There can be all sorts of little things under these kinds of spaces, and it can be a great place to start your declutter. Often, if something has been under the bed or sofa for a while, you won’t need it. So you can start your throwing out right away. This goes for all rooms in the house; what needs a deep clean to start off your decluttering?
Clearing things out before Christmas comes around can be beneficial to you in a number of ways. It can clear your home, help you to clean it, as well as help you get some extra cash for the holidays. If you have things in your home that you no longer need, but are still in a good condition, then they could be sold online on sites like eBay. Certain things, like baby items that are in good condition, or designer label items, can all be good for getting a good amount of money for. So before you simply throw away, could it be sold? If you’ve got a little time on your hands, you can definitely get a little extra for it, to put towards your Christmas gifts for others.
Good Enough To Donate?
Giving to items is a very worthy cause and does make a difference to those charities. However, it only makes a difference if the items are of good quality. It can be a good idea to ask yourself if you would buy this again in the state that it is in? If the answer is no, then you probably know the answer to if you should pass it onto goodwill or not. If it isn’t worthy of selling and you still donate, then it puts more pressure on the charity as they then have to dispose of it. So don’t just presume everything that you can’t sell can be give away. Some things will just have to be thrown out.
Are you looking forward to the holidays? It would be great to hear what you think and if you have a plan to declutter before the house gets filled with all things festive. It could be a good idea to think about experiences to give to others this year too, rather than just ‘stuff’ that is going to fill their house.
